Rangaprabhath is a living monument to a master craft man and his disciple in Theatre who dreamt of a Children’s Theatre for the holistic development of children through a conscious weaving of education and arts. The master is Prof. G. Sankara Pillai and the disciple is Guru Kochunarayana Pillai. Their association led to the blossoming of India’s first community oriented children’s theatre at a village called Alumthara, 25 kilometres north of Thiruvananthapuram city, Kerala’s capital. Began as a small experiment in story telling the initiative gradually grew into a Centre for dedicated experiments in children’s education through arts.
The greatest privilege in my life is that I came in to contact with one of the noblest creations of god, Prof. G.Sankara Pillai, who was the doyen of Malayalam Theatre. He and I gradually developed a ‘guru-shishya’ (Mentor-Disciple) relationship and the Rangaprabhath Children’s Theatre which we co-founded in 1970 is the realization of our dream.

The Guru K. Kochunarayana Pillai Award 2026 was presented to renowned poet, lyricist, painter, former Chief Secretary, and Devaswom Board Chairman Sri. K. Jayakumar at a grand ceremony held at Rangaprabhath Theatre Village on October 1, 2026. The award was presented by Prof. Aliyar, eminent actor, organiser, writer, and voice artist.
